The UK’s dream home is a 3,800 sq ft detached house by the sea, with a swimming pool, according to research by home insurance provider, swiftcover.com.
The research discovered that although a detached home is ‘the dream’ property type for more than half (55 per cent) of UK homeowners, a cottage (15 per cent) and even a bungalow (13 per cent) made up the top three ‘most wanted’. Six per cent see their dream home as being a castle.
For almost half (46 per cent), the coast is the location of choice, followed by the countryside for one in four (26 per cent). Age certainly influenced the location of the perfect pad with the majority (51 per cent) of those aged over 54 wishing for a seaside location, whereas the youngsters (18 to 24 yr olds) saw their dream pad in a town or city centre (14 per cent) – more than any other age group.
Despite having a firm idea of what their perfect home would look like, less than half (41 per cent) expected to be able to afford it at some stage in their life; however, those determined to fulfil their goal believe that they’ll do so by the time they turn 44 years old. Just two per cent said they’d have it by the time they turned 30 years old.
James Barclay, home insurance underwriting manager at swiftcover.com said: “A detached house by the sea with four or five bedrooms is the UK’s perfect pad. Having goals and aspirations is wonderful but it’s such a shame that our property dreams are simply out of reach for the majority of us.”
swiftcover.com’s own desk research went on to reveal the cost of the UK’s dream home – analysing the data obtained from the above research i.e. a detached, four bedroom house with a private swimming pool, alongside the price of existing houses matching this description currently on the property market – to be in the region of £1.5m.
Accompanying the research, calculations revealed that with a down payment of a third on the £1.5m perfect house, the mortgage equates to £9,376.67 a month (1) over 11 years – assuming the person was a first time buyer at 30 years old and acquires their perfect home at 44 years old. This would require a household income of £23,441.68 a month, or £281,300 a year (2) – £140,650 each person, considering a couple would be likely to be paying the bill.
Brits’ perfect pads weren’t confined to a particular size, location or type but these perfect pads contained a few ‘must have’ entertainment rooms. A swimming pool was the biggest splash with almost half (43 per cent) citing one as a must have for their dream home. A cinema room (30 per cent) and games room (27 per cent) was also high on the list for many. Those with virtual billions demanded riding stables (eight per cent) and a golf course (three per cent) to accompany their four bed detached house by the sea.
James Barclay continued, “Whether it’s a £1.5m dream home or a slightly more realistically priced property, movinghouse is always a huge decision and probably the most money you will ever spend. A house is an enormous investment and requires some serious thought but taking care of it once you own it is also vitally important. Budgeting for adequate home insurance cover is extremely important.”

After the reign of Panda, Penguin is now taking its turn. Things have certainly been kept hopping in the search engine optimization industry as Google, the Internet’s premier search engine and general overlord, maintains a running stream of algorithm changes endearingly represented by cute wildlife creatures. The most recent update has website owners and webmasters minding 53 changes to the algorithm. To help its customers understand how the changes impact the SEO status quo, quality content creation and distribution company SEOPartner recently released a news video with owner and top online marketing authority James Schramko explaining the difference the changes created and offering tips on how to protect against Google Penguin.
“It’s been another week of Penguin, so we’ve had a lot more chance to see what’s going on,” states Schramko in the video. He reports that he and his team went through SEOPartner’s customer results and analyzed them. Their findings netted them the following figures: “48% of our customers have been maintaining their already good rankings, 31% have improved substantially with the recent Penguin updates, and 21% of our customer base looks like they have had some sort of impact from Penguin.”
Schramko suggests that customer websites that are doing well can credit fresh content, good site structure, and getting a broad mix of anchor text for their good rankings. In the meantime, he’s asking the customers whose websites were negatively affected by Penguin for additional or secondary keywords. “If we haven’t asked you, it means that we’ve already gone and researched what your additional or secondary words are, and we’re making sure that not only are we targeting the phrases that you asked us to target but we’re also sending you links for related phrases,” Schramko explains. To find out related phrases, people can go to Google and search their keywords; the related phrases will be indicated at the bottom of the page.
Schramko offers this assurance, “We’re making sure that we get you a broad mix of links so that your site is not going to get Penguin-slapped or ‘Penguinated’.” The new SEOPartner forms will actually already ask for secondary or additional related phrases. According to the SEOPartner chief, to do SEO correctly these days, websites should have a collection of related phrases lifting their results. There should be focus on the overall impact of getting good search rankings for a related set of phrases.
Schramko cites SEMRush and Google Analytics as recommended tools to use to find out related phrases. With SEMRush, webmasters can see what other phrases their sites are ranking for beyond the first page. With Google Analytics, they can see what phrases are bringing traffic to their account. “Google Webmaster Tools recently updated their reporting to show you the search traffic for your phrases, and that is a good place to figure out what your site is all about and what Google thinks it’s all about,” shares the web marketing master.
“One of our packages really focuses on getting a bunch of different links, up to 10 different links. I suggest that you actually maximize that,” asserts Schramko. “Go broad. Get 10 different links rather than ten times 1 link. If you’re looking to improve the linkjuice of your site and to get rankings across the board, I’m suggesting go a little broader these days and focus on the phrases that bring you money, but also the related phrases that prop those phrases up.”
He offers his main tip for the week, “Install a heatmap on your website.” He recommends website optimizers Crazy Egg and Click Tail, “They will give you a heatmap. It shows you where people are clicking on your sites so you can start optimizing your pages for better conversions because if you can double your conversions, that is the same effect as doubling your traffic.”

Online backups have been allowing people to store files, whether domestic or corporate, offsite since 2008. People can save data on other devices, of course, such as CD or memory stick, (and, before these were developed, floppy disk) but these are devices that can get damaged or lost. Computers, especially laptops, can be lost or stolen, and they can also be corrupted or damaged by fire or flood, so important documents and other files need to be kept safe but available. However, the devices that are used for backing up also need to be kept safe; many people back up their data on to, say, a CD, only to leave the CD in the vicinity of the computer itself; even kept in the same house could prove disastrous should the house catch fire or suffer a burglary. Another more reliable way was needed, but one that was safe, secure, efficient, and easy to use.
Dropbox created the concept of online backups, having recognised the demand for such a service before anyone else had even thought it was possible; the system it developed eased its users’ file storage and safety worries, and soon picked up a respectable fan base. Indeed, many of its users are happy with the system that Dropbox provides for them and, if questioned, would be reluctant to change; human nature being what it is, people are willing to put a lot of research into something new but, once they have made their decision, all they then want is to be reassured by it. Today, though, advances in technology move at break-neck speed, and what seems ideal one day can look distinctly outdated the next; online backups are no exception to this, and Dropbox can no longer take its users for granted.
Online backup solutions are not only proliferating, each new one is being developed with a firm eye on the competition. The one that offers the most for the least amount of outlay, will be the one that takes centre stage. Even so, no online backup service today can afford to sit back and relax.
New services are being launched all the time, and that place at the top of the online backup tree is continually there for the taking. While Dropbox may have started the idea, and collected many followers as it evolved, other pretenders to the throne have not been far behind; now, some of them have caught up, and are poised to take them down.
Google Drive, launched in April this year, is rapidly taking the spotlight away from Dropbox. In the Which? Text Daily report of 25 April, Google Drive is described as ‘Google’s Dropbox Killer’ a title that should strike fear into the heart of Dropbox implying, as it does, the demise of Dropbox itself.

Dropbox and Google Drive offer the same basic service but with some notable differences, not least the amount of file storage capacity. Dropbox’s free 2GB, compared to Google Drive’s 5GB, also free, looks mean. Even Google Drive’s paid-for storage offers greater value for money. Dropbox really needs to increase the amount of storage it provides.
Pricing:
Prices vary depending on the plan chosen by the user but, overall, Dropbox’s paid-for options are dearer than Google Drive’s, and offer less storage. As time goes on, file storage capacity will be one of the over-riding priorities for potential online backup users when they are deciding which system to use. Dropbox needs to make this one of their priorities, too.
Many of Dropbox’s users are fiercely loyal to its service, although this probably has more to do with the fact that they are used to how it works, than for any other reason. Most people prefer to stay with something they know, but this loyalty cannot be taken for granted. Complacency has destroyed many a previously-thriving corporation, so an awareness of what is going on in the wider world is essential.
It would be a good idea right now for Dropbox to wake up and take a good look outside its own bubble. OK, it did command the top spot, and so it deserved to; after all, online backups is Dropbox’s baby but, to avoid getting left behind, it needs to up its game, starting today.
